ASCE Capital - January Luncheon

  • The Studio @ Adams Hub 111 West Proctor Street Carson City, NV, 89703 United States (map)

Presentation:

Join us for a presentation by Chelsea Cluff, P.E. and Caroline Elliott, E.I. on the Marlette Lake Dam Rehabilitation Project. The Marlette Lake Dam is a large, high-hazard earthen embankment dam located on the east side of the Lake Tahoe basin. The Dam was originally constructed 150 years ago to form a 12,000 ac-ft reservoir that supplies water to municipalities in Northern Nevada as part of the Marlette Lake Water System. Despite historic and ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the Dam, it has deteriorated over the course of its life and much of its infrastructure is nearing or past end-of-life. The Dam is presently at risk of potential failure from further deterioration and is also susceptible to failure from significant hydrologic and seismic events. Securing this significant water resource is a priority for the Nevada State Public Works Division. Lumos and Associates was charged with the design of the Dam’s full rehabilitation. The Design Team has recently reached a 60% design milestone and the project is set to break ground in 2025.

Speaker Bio:

Caroline Elliott’s career in Water Resources Engineering began in New Zealand, but has since brought her to Lake Tahoe, where she has been working on the Marlette Lake Dam project, among many other projects, with Lumos and Associates. Her expertise includes hydrological analysis and modeling, hydraulic design of gravity and pressurized pipelines, civil infrastructure design, water treatment, flood modeling and mitigation, master planning, and of course, dam design. Caroline enjoys seeing her projects come to life in the mountains that she now calls home, where you might also spot her mountain biking or skiing in the area.”

Chelsea is a licensed engineer in the state of Nevada, and has five years of engineering experience with a focus in water, wastewater, and storm water management. Chelsea specializes in the planning, design, and construction of earthen embankment dams and has been involved in several notable local projects, including the TRI Center Effluent Reservoir Expansion Project, as well as the West Wash Dam Rehabilitation Project and Watershed Analysis in the City of Reno. Outside of the office, Chelsea enjoys ultra-running and spending time with her two border collies.
