ASCE Capital - May Luncheon

  • The Studio @ Adams Hub 111 West Proctor Street Carson City, NV, 89703 United States (map)

Presentation:

Join us for a presentation by James Gingery, PhD, PE, GE, of Keller for an Overview of Ground Improvement for Foundations. Poor soils don’t have to stay that way. A variety of ground improvement techniques are available that enhance the engineering properties of soil allowing for vastly better performance under static and earthquake loads.  Soft compressible soils can be stiffened to reduce settlement, liquefaction can be mitigated and weak soils can be transformed into rock-like materials.  This presentation will introduce you to the ground improvement methods most frequently used in the Western U.S. and which are typically more economical than deep foundations. Some of the theoretical underpinnings used in design will be described, but the focus will be on illustrating the practical application of these techniques through case study examples.

Speaker Bio:

Dr. James Gingery is a Chief Engineer in Keller North America’s Western U.S. business unit.  He has over twenty-five years of experience in geotechnical and earthquake engineering for water, energy, transportation, industrial/commercial and residential projects. At Keller he leads a team providing ground improvement and geostructural engineering for design-build projects across the Western U.S. and beyond.  Dr. Gingery holds an M.S. in geotechnical engineering from U.C. Berkeley and a Ph.D. in geotechnical earthquake engineering from U.C. San Diego.  He is a license professional engineer in multiple states including Nevada.  In 2015 he was awarded the Shamsher Prakash Prize for Excellence in the Practice of Geotechnical Engineering.
